Koichiro Matsuura, Unesco's director-general, has condemned the campaign of violence waged against Iraqi academics and intellectuals. He called for international solidarity and support for education and educators in the country. The Study and Research Center for the Arab and Mediterranean World, says that up to 180 academics have been killed in Iraq since 2003 and thousands driven into exile.
