...yet so little has changed
Beleaguered academics often give the impression that theirs is a modern malaise. But Alastair Hunter, AUT Scotland president, proved otherwise, citing a document discovered recently in the union's headquarters. The paper reported a general meeting in 1950, saying: "At this time, as so often in the past, great concern was caused by the poor salaries and almost total insecurity of the assistants, who were liable to have their appointments terminated at the end of three or four years even if they had proved entirely satisfactory." If things have finally begun to move on pay, the question now is, will it take another 60 years to complete the framework negotiations?
