Treasure trove

Victorian explorer David Livingstone's drawing of a fish found in Lake Nyassa, which he reached in 1859 on his Zambezi Expedition, is one of 150,000 items in the John Murray archive. The collection, bought by the National Library of Scotland for £31 million, holds materials from great writers, scientists and politicians of the late 18th to early 20th centuries. It was started by Edinburgh-born publisher John Murray, and its holdings include items from Lord Byron, Charles Darwin, Jane Austin and Thomas Carlyle.
