Talk of the town

Town and Country Planning in the UK. Thirteenth edition

This is a classic textbook that has been brought up to date. It includes detailed discussions about subject areas such as heritage planning and sustainable developments, which are mentioned in similar existing books but not in the detail

that is provided here. It also discusses the impact of new Labour's policies on planning and the outcome of recent changes. As such, it is a welcome and timely work.

Suitable for undergraduate courses such as planning, estate management, housing, building surveying, geography and environmental studies, it will also appeal to professionals in related occupations.

The aim of this new edition is to provide a thorough update of the previous one, offering detail on all aspects of planning, and to consider past and current issues and policies that have an impact on the UK planning system.

It differs from previous editions in a number of ways. First, references have been updated to include the new policies introduced by the Labour government since 1997, such as the impact of devolution on Scotland and Wales, spatial planning and national and regional planning guidance.

Second, many chapters have undergone major changes, including "Planning", "The environment and sustainable development" and "Heritage planning".

The book is interspersed with tables and diagrams, which are efficient and easy to follow, and the more extensive use of boxes in this edition helps to provide further clarity.

This book continues to provide a comprehensive, well-written and easy-to-read account of town and country planning in the UK.

It gives valuable insights and will be an extremely useful and practical guide to those seeking to increase their knowledge of this area.

Maureen Rhoden is programme leader, School of Architecture and Construction, University of Greenwich.
