Performance poet Benjamin Zephaniah is to receive the honorary degree of doctor of letters from the University of the West of England.

UWE has also appointed Jennifer Bone, vice-chair of the Society for Research into Higher Education, pro vice-chancellor emeritus.

Tim Gray, professor in the department of biological sciences at the University of Essex, has been elected chairman of the bacteriology division of the International Union of Microbiological Societies for three years.

Trevor Jones, composer of film music for, among other films, Notting Hill, Gulliver's Travels and Richard III, is to continue as chair in screen music at the National Film and Television School, thanks to a Pounds 25,000 grant from the Garfield Weston Foundation.

Upendra Baxi, professor of law at the University of Warwick, has been awarded an honorary doctorate of laws by the National Law School, University of India.

James Beckford, professor of sociology at Warwick, has been elected president for four years of the International Society for the Sociology of Religion.

Michael Mallett, emeritus professor in the department of history at Warwick, has been decorated with the Commendatore dell'Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana, by the ambassador of Italy, Luigi Amaduzzi.

Alaistair Campbell, professor of ethics in medicine at the University of Bristol, has been appointed to the chief medical officer's expert group on cloning, which advises government on therapeutic cloning research.

Glynne Wickham, emeritus professor of drama at Bristol, has been awarded the Sam Wanamaker award for distinguished service to the theatre.

Matthew Saxton, lecturer in the department of psychology, Royal Holloway, University of London, has been awarded the 1999 Paul Pimsleur award for research in foreign language education, sponsored by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages and the Modern Language Journal.

Ed Maltby, director of the Institute for Environmental Research, Royal Holloway, has been selected as the prestigious Partrick Lecturer for 1999-2000 by Louisiana State University, US. The award recognises expert scientists in the field of wetland and coastal science.

Glyn Humphreys, professor of cognitive psychology at Birmingham University, has received the President's Award from the British Psychological Society.

David Kerr, clinical director of the CRC Institute for Cancer Studies at Birmingham, has been awarded the second Digestive Oncology Prize offered jointly by the International Institute for Drug Development and the Association Europeenne de Recherche en Oncologie.
